About Us
Our Vision
Our vision aligns with Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST Robotics, who wanted to inspire young people’s interest in science and technology.
Portage Community High School’s FIRST Robotics team aspires to excite and motivate students to pursue education and
career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, marketing and math, all while
building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.
Mission
"Our mission is to inspire our team members to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in an exciting,
competitive program that builds on their math, science, technology, marketing and public relations skills.
We hope to inspire creativity, innovation and motivation that will foster well-rounded life skills like self-confidence, communication,
and leadership."
Our Program
Portage Community High School’s FIRST Robotics Team #3640 is currently in their third season.
After a strong showing in their first year of competition, this year’s team is inexperienced but focused and motivated to make this season a success.
The team currently consists of sixteen students and three mentors.
Mr. Jason Shanafelt is the team’s guide through the logistics of the FIRST Robotics competitions.
Mr. Steve Ballentine is the team’s coach in the construction and engineering of the robot.
Mrs. Michelle Rowlson, a Government and Econ teacher at Portage Community High School
heads up the fundraising and marketing team.
